Morse’s Golf team definitely landed on the green with a great idea from four years ago.

The brilliant idea was an annual tournament hosted by Morse following the end of the girls golf season.

Those who did not qualify for the City Championship Tournament were allowed to compete in a different tournament called Best of the Rest which was hosted by Morse High School at the National City golf course on Oct. 18.

After a long and tiring season, Morse’s Girls Golf hosted its yearly Best of the Rest Tournament to officially end their season. The tournament was open for those who did not qualify for the City Championship and still wanted to win medals.

This was the fourth year Morse has hosted the Best of the Rest Tournament. Rex Calvin, Morse’s golf coach, plans on expanding and making the tournament even better in the upcoming years.

“Maybe we can come up with something special, maybe another award,” Calvin suggested. “I think the larger we get and the more people we get, then we can spend more on trophies and so and so forth.”

Calvin’s goal is to get all 18 schools in the district to show up and compete.

Although the tournament did not count towards the championship, there was still pressure on the girls to play their hardest.

“There’s still medals to win and a lot more of it, so now you’re inclined to try and gain a medal,” explained Melanie Andrews, second year returnee.

With the Best of the Rest tournament marking the end of the girls golf season, the girls reflected on how they played this year.

“I feel like I improved a lot,” exclaimed Janelle Enriquez, second year returner. “Last year in my first Best of the Rest Tournament I got a 74, but today I got like 20 better. It’s from all the practicing!”

A reflection on how the team played as a whole this year was also progressive.

“Not a lot of us were playing for that long. So for what we had, we did pretty well,” pointed out Andrews. “I’m proud of us.”

Morse’s Best of the Rest Tournament turned out to be a birdie!
