History was made in Morse’s boys golf team.

As boys golf season comes to an end, two boys stood out.

By playing well throughout the golf season, junior Vince Bartolome and freshman Richard Calvin were able to reach the second and third day of the City Tournament which began at the Balboa Golf Course on April 30.

City Tournament is a multi-day event that takes place at the end of the golf season and is for players from high schools all around the city to compete in. Boys of Morse’s golf team all competed on the first day, but only two reached the second day.

“It’s hard enough to make it to the first day,” Bartolome suggested.  “To be able to play again is pretty cool.”

Both players did well on the second day, but Calvin got through to the third day, making him the first Morse student ever to do so.

“It’s pretty cool,” Calvin said. “I was excited when I heard I got in.”

Because it is Calvin’s first year on the golf team, and his dad is also the coach, a lot of pressure was placed on him.

“I’m pushed to be better because I’ve been around golf all my life,” Calvin believed.

Even though they did not win in the tournament, they gained a lot of experience and had a great time.

“I wasn’t trying to beat the other players,” Bartolome urged.  “I was just trying to play golf and have fun because I don’t see golf as a competition.”

As the golf season wraps up, the boys reflected on their performance throughout the season.

“I did a lot better than the last two years,” Bartolome said. “I was able to make it to the second day of the tournament.”

Next year, both boys plan on continuing the sport and already have hopes and goals for the upcoming year.

“It’s kinda sad that the season is ending, but I’m also looking forward for what’s coming next,” Calvin said.

Although City Tournament is over, Morse will be hosting their annual Best of the Rest tournament for those who did not qualify for the City Tournament.

Getting one player to reach the third day of the City Tournament marks a huge accomplishment for Morse’s boys golf team.
