AP Art History students usually go to the San Diego Museum of Art, but this year they had the privilege to go to Los Angeles’ very own Getty Villa.

Going to the Getty Villa, far from the typical SDMA, is a perfect place for AP Art History students to come face to face with a variety of art pieces.

AP Art History students went to the Getty Villa in Malibu, California on Dec. 12, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in order to come in contact with art and gain an impactful, educational experience to better prepare for the AP exam in May.

The students started off with an assignment that was given by APAH teacher Ellen Bergan which was to find two art pieces to compare. Students were split into groups, each with an instructor who helped find valid pieces for their assignment.

“Our group first saw a bronze statue of a Greek athlete and then we went downstairs to compare it to a Roman statue of Zeus which the instructor gave all the context to,” stated junior Vanessa Alcova. “After that we were able to wander in every exhibit and take pictures in the garden area with two hours to spare.”

Many students have not seen art in person, so this trip was an opportunity for those that have not been fortunate enough to do so. Seeing the art up close gives a different perspective on the pieces which is beneficial to many when taking the APAH exam.

“It was my first time seeing art and having background knowledge for it,” stated Alcova. “I think seeing it in person will help me to better visualize and explain textures of pieces when it comes to tests.”
